Thumbpicking was popularized by Merle Travis in the early part of the 20th Century. Developed by incorporating banjo techniques on the guitar, melodies are played with the index finger, while the thumb picks out an accompaniment on the lower strings. It remains a staple of Muhlenberg County, KY, a locus of American bluegrass, old-timey folk music index and folk music. Compiled by guitarist Pat Kirtley, the lineup of musicians featured here are some of the best performers of this style, including Moon Mullins, Maurice Jones, folk music index and Bob Saxton, who have been playing since Merle Travis` time in the spotlight.
