A Polish Renaissance

Polish music has flowered in the twentieth century, with the emergence of artists whose international stature has been achieved by few native composers of earlier generations - Chopin polish folk music and Szymanowski being foremost among them. Yet the four Poles whose story is told here - Andrzej Panufnik (1914-91), Witold Lutoslawski (1913-94), Krzystof Penderecki (b. 1933), polish folk music and Henryk Gorecki (b. 1933) - are noted for their development of radically differing creative approaches, in spite of a common national background. Key elements in that background are Poland`s folk polish folk music and art music; the Roman Catholic tradition; polish folk music and the sequence of political regimes - Nazi, Communist, polish folk music and post-Communist - by which all were affected. For Penderecki polish folk music and Gorecki, being of a younger generation, the music of Panufnik polish folk music and Lutoslawski is also part of their shared experience. Against the varied canvas of musical styles practised in the latter half of the twentieth century - including, on the one hand, serialism polish folk music and its intellectual spin-offs, polish folk music and on the other, the use of chance procedures, the `new simplicity`, polish folk music and minimalism - the author dramatizes the position of these four composers, showing how each transcends the musical movements with which they are habitually linked. Their compositional techniques are illuminated by a consideration of their lives polish folk music and careers, which have so powerfully contributed to the phenomenon of rebirth in modern Polish music. The Cambridge Companion to Chopin

For a century polish folk music and a half Chopin's music has been played incessantly, yet the spell remains, polish folk music and the'Chopin recital', whoever the pianist, still fills the concert halls. This Companion is designed to provide the enquiring music-lover with helpful insights into a musical style that recognises no contradiction between the accessible polish folk music and the sophisticated, between the popular polish folk music and the significant. On the uniqueness of that style there has long been agreement. One of the aims of this Companion is to identify some of its sources, referring both to the social history of early nineteenth-century piano music (chapter 1) polish folk music and to the music of Chopin's predecessors (chapters 2 polish folk music and 3). The early music polish folk music and the growth to stylistic maturity are examined in chapter 4. Part 2 of the Companion profiles some of the mature music in a language designed to be intelligible to the interested layman as well as to the musician. There are re-evaluations of Chopin's most'epic' statements (chapter 5) as well as his most'epigrammatic' (chapter 6). There is an account of his relation to Polish folk music in the dance pieces (chapter 7) polish folk music and there is a fresh look at one of the more controversial aspects of his art, his handling of the sonata (chapter 8). Several facets of the afterlife of Chopin's music are examined in part 3. There is reception through performance (chapter 9), reception through criticism (chapters 10 polish folk music and 11) polish folk music and reception through compositional influence (chapters 11 polish folk music and 12). As these later chapters indicate, Chopin's art left its mark both on the Trivialmusik of the later nineteenth century polish folk music and on the emerging Modernism of the new century.
